the so-called plan....

heya! yesterday kind of went by in a blurr for me :) i had declared it a "knitting day" ... but really, every day i declare that. ha.
i also told a friend that i just wished i was an octopus who never needed to sleep. and it totally makes sense to me.

because we're totally getting into that time of the year. you know what i'm talking about. my pinterest feed is already filling with christmas decroation and crafting ideas, umm what happened to thanksgiving and hallowe'en!? yah, it's gonna be a very crafty season around these parts for sure!

nook's actually taking part in a few markets this year! and i'm super excited about it but what i need to figure out is how i'm going to fit it all in!? knits for the booth, knits for christmas gifts, etsy, test knits, kals and knits for me?! also, i'm pretty sure my little man needs a new sweater. eek!

so i need a game plan. we've got less than 3 months until christmas. (it's totally true) and clearly i can't do it all. also, fall is one of my most favourite times of the year. i don't want to spend my fave season feeling overwhelmed and rushed. no. i want to fully enjoy it. so here's where i start with "the plan"

get your supplies - if you order online, i'd be looking to order now. the sooner you have everything organized, and have your product, the sooner you can get crafting. recieving your supplies like with 3 days to actually have it created, and wrapped is crazy. (i've done it, it's crazy)

cut stuff out - it seems simple enough, but it's really hard for a lot of people to do. i used to want to make hand knits for everybody for christmas. yeah, i don't do that anymore. i just can't. so now i pick a very select few to knit for. also, most of my family is far away... and that means of course that you have to ship stuff out in like.. november. a lot of families draw names, which i think is a great idea! that's another way to keep things a little more managable.

be ok with it - if you don't get a lot done, be ok with it. just be ok with whatever you can fit in. stressing over making yourself create so many items just defeats the purpose of why we do it. it's a busy time of year.. if you can't fit it all in, just don't.

be realistic - clearly you can't knit a sweater for everyone. and keep yourself sane. clearly. small gifts are just as meaningful too... and portable. you can not easily cart around an afghan or full sized sweater in your project bag... but a toque? or mug hug? easy peasy ;)

include something for yourself - be nice to yourself. afterall, you want to always enjoy what you do, right? and it doesn't have to be big... even if you can't do it before the holiday season, have some supplies and pattern set aside for when the hubub dies down. something to really look forward to :)

get started - there's no time like the present. in fact, i know some of you have probably been crafting for the holidays since the summer! lucky you. but for those of us who haven't, don't get overwhelmed before you've even started. just pick up those needles and get clicking away :) drinking lots of coffee and tea helps lots too.

oh and sleep only if you have to. just kidding...... sort of. ;)

now that i've indulged my "plan" i should mention that i'm probably already breaking the rules. ha. but the point is to try your best to stay focused. and enjoy it. right? how about you? have you created your holiday game plan? what first on your list? xo

  1. Love your list and can totally relate! I don't get nearly the amount of stuff done that I want to, but I try to take more time to spend with my little guys and friends and family, and I'm so glad for that! I loved your little creatures at Fibrations, btw!

    1. thanks! yah, family is just so so important. there will always be knitting. letting go of projects is sometimes actually a good thing. ha. i'm so happy we've finally met! xo

  2. what is it with us knitters and our brilliant 'plans' and 'rules' that we completely ignore as soon as we've made them... however, any attempt to curtail my crazy yarn purchasing and every-spare-minute-knitting-ness, or at least to try and make my knitting a bit more realistic, is surely a good thing :) I think you'll agree :)

  4. Um, I want that mail box...with the yarn included!! ;) I have to admit that both my family and Brett's family are all about gift giving to the kids (although, grandparents will forget and get something for Brett and I!). All of this really helps in the holiday stress...I'm also thinking of implementing a "gifting box", in which I'll knit an easy peasy project (like a Rae or a Hitchhiker) in between the harder ones and put them in the box so that when a last minute gift is needed I'll have one!

  5. Love it! I make so many plans and lists and then....well...but this year I've started earlier for the holidays so I'm half way there I hope! And I'm making my VERY first ever project for myself! Plus it was fabulous running into you and your little man today! I look forward to that elusive coffee date we have been talking about for months now! hahaha! ~Barbie
