hooked

sooooo you remember that i am a confessed obsessed knitter, right?

well it's true for crochet too. :)

yep. it's done! and i'm pretty happy. this will be what i'm teaching at the cloth castle next month. don't ya think it's pretty?

i ended up staying up very late last night... until 1am to finish it. like i said, i'm crazy when it comes with yarn. i forget to sleep. seriously. and i'll even choose to go with less sleep in favour of knitting or crocheting. see? insane. i don't know why i'm like that, but i am. and i probably always will be. haha.

anyhoo.. here are the deets on the blanket:

i based the pattern on the summer garden granny square by lucy of Attic24. the colour choice? well lucky me, as this is a store sample i was able to grab whatever i wanted. sweet, right? i know. so i grabbed them all.
this blanket is made up entirely of sirdar calico dk. an uber squishy and soft blend of cotton and acrylic. 60-40 blend.
love.
and it took me a week. ridiculous. though to be honest, i did a lot of work on it daily. i pushed out this sample because it's a class i'll be teaching next month! so i wanted it up in the store for students to oogle over and fall madly in love with ;)

go ahead. love it.

i totally love the outcome.
it's pretty.

any of you up until the wee hours of the morning because you just have to finish your project? or are you one of the smarty-pants who knows that getting sleep should be a priority too :) i'd love to hear what you're working on!

  1. So you should expect me at your class next month. Is food and lodging included in the cost of the class ;)

Seriously that is adorb! LOVE IT! You and Shannon are totally winning me over to the dark side of crochet :) Not that it was a hard push seeing as I'm already addicted to yarn.

I so wish I could choose knitting over sleep, unfortunately I am one of those weirdos that will fall asleep after about 22 hrs of being awake...well more like 20. I can count on one hand how many all-nighters I've pulled in my life which is sad since I'm only 28.

    Great job.

  2. several things. first... there's a dark side to crochet? haaha.. like you said, you're practically here anyways, so join in! lodging is def. provided for you!!
also, when it comes to needing no sleep? i'm all talk. i totally need sleep... i don't remember my last all-nighter either....
and one other thing? you're only 28? not fair.

  5. Reminds me of my blanket I had when I was younger. Sadly it started unravelling. Now I almost feel like following in my little cousin's footsteps and learning how to make one!

  6. yes yes, everyone should make one! everyone. really. ;)

  7. Awe, you guys make me feel so loved <3 Thanks! I totally wish I could come.

Even though most of my knitter friends here in the states are anti-crochet I really never could be. My Grandma has made me too many cool things that were crocheted. I have this adorb dress that she made hanging in my closet just waiting for Elsa to grow into. I remember wearing it and loving it to pieces.

Well, I guess I'll have to find someone half as cool as you guys to show me how to crochet...that or figure out how to drive and swim over to ya ;)

  9. Well, it will be a few years...but I'm thinking I'll post a pic of the dress next week. I think I was 8 or 9 when Grandma made the dress.

Also, I'm thinking that Shannon was so quick to offer me a place to stay because really she just wants me to come cook for her ;)

  11. Sleep? What is this sleep thing you speak of?? There's yarn to be played with!! Currently up, even though I should totally be in bed, about to do a few rows on the ballband washcloth I have on the needles!

  13. i see so many people with these cute custom tags they put on their creations. but, i can't seem to find any but relatively expensive ones - maybe i consider them expensive because i don't sell anything, and it's worth it if you do... but, do you mind telling me where you get yours??

  14. hi jennifer! so sorry for the late reply. i've been on holidays where internet connections are scarce :) i purchased my labels from inked papers on etsy. here is the link to her shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/inkedpapers
i thought she had great customer service!
and of course, i love the outcome ;)

  16. Any chance you can tell me how you joined the squares and added the border? I'm making the granny squares now using the Summer Garden pattern. Did you border the squares with white before you joined them? I've been experimenting, but I just can't get it right. I'm making this blanket for my SIL who is expecting baby #7!! Thanks in advance. Beautiful blanket, by the way!!

  17. Hi michelle! i ended up deciding to add a round of sc to the boarder before joining all of the squares. that gave me the definite whiter edges around each square. also, i joined the squares together with a whipstitch... the outer boarder i just sc around until it was as thick as i liked it :)
baby #7 wowza! i'd love to see a pic of yours when you're done!!!

  19. Thanks! I'll try and post a pic when I'm done. I was too lazy to search out the gorgeous yarn you used. Just picked up what I could find at Hobby Lobby. But it's soft and squishy so it'll work.

  20. that's the beauty of afghans, hey? you really can substitute most yarn:) and really, soft and squshy will ALWAYS work ;)

  21. This is GORGEOUS! I love it. Just found it via luvinthemommyhood. I have been wanting to make a granny squarish blanket for some time and can't believe you cranked this out in a week! I need to find the time...

    1. Thanks so much Anneliese!! i'm so glad you've found this space! i agree that a week is kind of an insane time to crank this out... ahaha, but you could totally crochet this up!!

  22. Your blankie is just too beautiful ... can you tell me what you did to join them, the white surround? Perhaps you will post the instructions after you have taught your class? I would have come only I am in Cape Town!! Amy x

    1. hi amy! with this blanket, i made sure to do one round of sc in white around each square, and then i joined them using the whipstitch. however i've since decided that the invisible stitch method does a better job, and creates a flatter seam:
      here's the link. : http://doyoumindifiknit.typepad.com/do_you_mind_if_i_knit/2010/02/joining-up-with-an-invisible-stitch.html

you can see another blanket that i made using the invisible stitch joining method here: www.ravelry.com/projects/gundyknitter/summer-garden-granny-square-2

i hope that helps! let me know :) have a fabulous day! xo
