do you know what today is???

today marks exactly 2 months until christmas! eeek! and coincidentally aaaakkkk!

but first, thanks for your kind words on feeling better the last few days... my time off to rest seems to have done me well, and i feel on the mend. :)
i was even productive! i decided to completely rearrange the furniture in the office/play room/craft room... and i love it. but of course, i don't have a camera soooooooo.. yah. it will be one of the first things i show you though. because i am one of those people who needs order before i can be truly productive.. and now that i have order in the craft room... bring on christmas knitting!

ahem. are you ready? 2 months will fly by. i know it. we'll have hallowe'en, remembrance day, (thanksgiving in the US) and then christmas! bam. let's not forget any of the parties we might want to either host, or attend... yikes. oh and did i mention that my hubby is going to sea for the majority of december?! say what? he will be home for christmas, but that leaves me for most of the decorating and planning.... yessssssss. ha.

of course, i'm also doing some markets in that time. so this rest thing i did this past week, has most definitely been a good thing. ;)

so here's what i thought. everyone likes a good bout of encouragement, and friendly little nudge... and if you're like me and like to have the holidays be as handmade as you can... well it takes more work. plain and simple. so i thought i'd try to find some projects to help you with your handmade holidays... given the right timeline.
of course you don't have to do the projects, i just thought it would be fun to actually find the projects that could totally work in the time frame, before finding them just a week before family arrives for the holidays. haha. right?
first up, obviously, the things that take more time.. and that you need to have done early. like the advent calendar. i personally love the idea of the advent calendar that doesn't include a cheap piece of chocolate. but instead something you can re-use every year, and becomes a part of your family...  obviously i've been on pinterest for inspiration... and here are a few that i've found :)

ornament advent calendar...

i thought this one was adorable! if you're a sewer (which i'm not) but how cute of an idea to hang a special ornament on the tree every day? and it's easy to store the bags...  i thought this was pretty unique...

embroidered felt advent calendar...

Source: purlbee.com via Rebecca on Pinterest

the purl bee has a cute tutorial on something that i feel i could possibly master. i love the bright, cheerful colours of this one.. and you can fill it with anything you'd like! gifts, goodies, or activities!

this steam-punk one is totally rad though...

and the activity one has to be my fave. you can alter what activities you do depending on your schedule, but they can range from baking christmas cookies, to donating items, to volunteering your time, going ice skating, colouring a christmas picture...... there are heaps of ideas. and it really brings the family together. that's the kind of advent calendar i'm hoping to make...

activity calendar...

this one from the complete guide to imperfect homemaking  looks uber do-able! and will also leave heaps of time for the other things on the holiday "to-do" list that require more time.... um like the hand-knit stocking my son is asking for this year... yikes!

for even more ideas check out chic & cheap nursery nicole has found these five cute ideas, and has explained on how to do them all on her blog! how fab!!

i love these ideas, and am determined to make an activity calendar this year... last year i tried to bunch all of the activities into less than two weeks. and it was pretty crazy... (i have such a loving husband though, who went along with it) ... that being said, we'll probably also get owen his lego advent calendar. it was a huge hit last year. yah, they cost a little.. but he got to have a new little lego toy every day... and extra bonus. no chocolate i plan on having enough of that closer to christmas anyways ;)

but before you freak out on me for bringing christmas up so early... go check out one sheepish girl. she's just released the most adorable crochet pumpkin pattern to store your treats in. i've just taken a peek, and i believe i've got some orange yarn here...

how about you? did you grow up with an advent calendar? is it a family tradition with you? if you make one this year, what kind of calendar do you think you'll make? will you go all out? sew? knit? scrap-book style? come chat! i'd love to hear of your ideas! xo

happy purse knitting

i've never been a very confident sewer, but i have to say... i'm getting there! and after every sewing meetup, i feel more competent about my machine's capabilities. ;)

clearly i'm much more comfortable with knitting. and i am sure i always will be. but i had fun at our girl's modern sewing meet-up this past weekend! and it seems if i'm gonna sew, i'm gonna sew something for my knitting ;) of course i am.

a couple of months ago, one of my besties, jane posted about a project that she worked on at modern sewing. and i've honestly been obsessing about it ever since. she has now made several of these project bags... and it's a tease that i didn't have one. lol...also, i don't get a chance to go to these meet-ups as much as i'd like to... (we have them once a month)... but i seem to have missed out on many of them in a row now... so suffice to say i was very happy to be able to join the girls this month!

i knew exactly what i wanted to work on. and lucky me had jane as my hands-on teacher for the entire time! she even brought me a template and made the entire experience so fun for me. i made not only one but two project bags for my purse knitting. yes you read that right. two!!!

they're not perfect, but i'm very proud of them. and i love the colour combos! for someone who doesn't sew, i actually have a small anna maria horner stash.. they actually still need a drawstring. i plan on knitting up an i-cord and pulling that through. those are minor details though, and i'll get to them eventually :)

in the meantime, i've got even more of an excuse to cast on for a pair of socks for me!!! ha. as though i needed an excuse ;) if you want to try sewing your own project bag, check out jane's blog post about them here. i just followed her guidelines :) it's really a very easy pattern, and it was the perfect pattern to showcase my yummy fabric!

thanks so much jane, for all of your help on this. i had so much fun! and i'm looking forward to making more. because really,  we all need more than just a couple of project bags ;) oh and they'd probably make great gifts too! (i guess we could share, hey?)

do you reach out of your comfort zone when it comes to crafting? i'd love to hear of your stories! i'm off to brew another pot of coffee... want a mug? xo

don't let go! xo

and hello monday!

it has been one very busy and crazy weekend, and the week has started off no slower! can you believe we are now into the last week of june? insane how fast the times goes.

and as i look at my calendar i see that the summer is starting off with a bang. i'm so excited for this summer! we have lots planned, and i'm sure we'll be busy and active, and happy :) we've got family and friends visiting, owen is starting more swimming lessons next week, we've got lots of camping planned, and i've got knitterly goods in the works :)

sadly though we didn't get to go camping this past weekend. it poured. and i mean poured on friday. buckets. we had to cancel after i packed everything up. so sad. but instead i was able to go to knit night, and for the first time in what feels like about 5 months, i was able to go to our sewing meetup group! i feel very refreshed being able to spend so much time with my friends.

...and i was productive! bonus! ha. i promise to share with you this week what i got up to sewing.
but for now, i've got plenty on the needles... which i'll be able to share with you in the next few days.

a huge thank you to those of you who did some digging for info about my current crush of those striped shoes... too bad they are indeed sold out. but a good thing too, because i most certainly can't afford them :)

how's your week looking? what do you have planned? i'm in the mood to chat, and my coffee is especially good this morning... xo

daydreaming a little...

you know, i'm pretty happy to be a part of the crafty ring. to find a hobby that has such a community of people supporting you is pretty stinkin' neat. and i'm not just talking about yarn and needles or hooks. (but it's totally included)  i'm talkin' about the whole crafty ring. it's awesome!

i love how we support one another, be it in sewing, jewelry design, paper crafts, woodworking, gardening, weaving, spinning... all of it.
i'm super happy to have all of you as my friends! thanks for encouraging me to pursuing my  ridiculous desire to craft... to create.... and to be happy doing what i do. and thanks for being the creative inspiration that i rely on! that helps me to keep on moving!
you guys are the best! xo

there's really not a whole lot i would change...

you know... except for the obvious. ;) haha i love that pic.
don't forget! today is the last day to enter the giveaway for inked papers! go to the link here. and also, if you live in the victoria, bc area, and need help with your knitting, there's a knit-in this friday! (yeah, tomorrow) . i'd love to see you! check out the cloth castle for more details. xo

are you daydreaming today? what's on your mind? what are you creating? did you enter the giveaway? come chat. there's always either coffee or tea, or both. xoxo

label love and a giveaway!

ever since they've been making their little appearances, i've gotten so many compliments. so i think it's time they had the spotlight.

i have always loved my labels. and they were the extra touch that made nook feel real, you know? and they've now become part of what makes me recognizable. i love it!

i found them on etsy. (of course) ;) these were fantastically made by michelle, who is the force behind

with a bachelors degree in fine arts and a diploma in graphic design, she brings so much to the table. i love the detail she puts into every bit of her shop. labels aren't her only thing either, she creates everything from announcements, and invitations to stickers, wine labels, and tags.
there is something here for everyone!

and this busy woman is a mama of 2! you know that adding a bit of fun to the mix is always important.  i mean hello! creating a postcard where the recipient can cut out and assemble a mini moving van? awesome! yes. i never would have thought of an interactive moving announcement.

i really do love her work. and i've always been so pleased with her service :)
and i've been realizing and am aware that you do too! so many of you have asked where i've gotten my labels, and that you are looking for some of your own! so i've got some news for you!

michelle has generously offered up a $25 gift certificate to her lovely shop! it's time for a giveaway! now you can have that extra special touch to your business, or to your invitations, or just for your guilty pleasure :)

this is the perfect time to get yourself labels, or stickers or whatnot for an upcoming summer market! i'm so excited about this giveaway!
should we get to the knitty gritty? (hahah knitty)... alright.

how to enter
pop on over to inked papers, and scope out her shop. then come on back here and leave a comment, letting me know what you would choose to spend your winnings on if you won. (the gift certificate can also go towards shipping)

the rules
you need to leave a valid email address with your comment so that you could be contacted if you win. if there is no contact info there, i'll have to pick another winner. winner will be chosen by a random number generator.

bonus entry

this giveaway is open until thursday, april 12th, 2012. midnight PST (pacific standard time).

good luck to everyone! and a very big thank you to michelle for the wonderful prize! find all things inked papers

do you have a special product you'd love to see your label on? are you a sucker for stationary? any markets you're planning for this summer? i'll be back tomorrow with details on how the all sprung out market went! xo

3.13.2012

under 48 hrs!

it's crunch time, and i'm layin' it on thick... my work, i mean... but now i want some kind of peanut butter bar after writing that.. ha. i've been working hard here preparing for another craft market. i have just 18 days left to produce for "All Sprung Out". eeks!

and so there' s nothing like deadlines to give me incentive.
i think you already know that i can be obsessive when it comes to working with yarn and needles, or hooks as the case may be. call it the dutch in me, or just me being insane... but when i get a project on the brain, and i want it done fast... i'm fairly determined.

so yep. i made this in under 48 hrs. i believe that is a record. and not something i could necessairly do on a consistent basis (because then i'd really have no life). but i love the outcome, and i'm surprisingly not so tired today.
i managed to get other things done too... and owen did get my attention :)

this is meant to be a lap blanket of sorts. i remember when owen was wee, and i had to bundle him up in the stroller or the car seat.. it was so annoying to have to wrap blankets around his little legs. and then i'd not notice him kicking them off.. and the corner of the blanket would come out from under his chubby little legs, and get caught in the wheel of the stroller. oh goodness. it broke my heart when i once put a hole in a handmade blanket. not cool. not cool at all.
so with this size, you wouldn't have to worry about it.

this is loosely based on the other blanket i made.. do you remember my spring flowers blanket?
you can also see my ravelry notes on that blanket here.  it was bigger...and did take me longer (i promise).

and nothing screams spring better than these lovely flowers!
i think it works for both a boy or a girl. i personally love these colours.

what do you think?
ps. i do realize that my label isn't sewn fully on... i have a confession... the needle broke as i was trying to sew, and i honestly don't know what i'm doing when it comes to switching out needles on my machine. yikes. thankfully i've got lots of girlfriends who do know what to do in this situation... sooo i'm waiting on one of them showing me. haha.

so now i'm off to continue my happy dance, and get more crafting done. i want my table looking full of lovely springy things ;) besides it's good prep for yet another market in the summer ;)

what are you up to today? do you have any spring and summer markets that you're preparing for? how do you organize your time to get a table's worth of product ready. what are your favourite decorating tips?
i'd love to hear from you! do you like the blanket? xo

"star-1"

the weekend was a blast. soo fun. and crafty! our knit night was held at a pub this week. oh goodness, did we ever have fun. hahah. many laughs were had, and i'm even surprised at  the amount of knitting that did happen! we were out until the wee hours of the morning. hahaa. and then we're so hard-core.. the next day we had our modern-sewing meetup. so fun!

i bought myself a sewing machine about two and a half years ago. but i'm not a very comfortable sewer. however, i'm learning and i'm eager to learn more :)

meet... "star-1" i honestly don't have any idea where he gets these names... but owen has a special thing for stars i suppose. seriously. lol.

i have stuck with safe for this project. not a whole lot of shaping.. but i think that's what makes him so uber cute! i have some anna maria horner that i thought would be perfect for this project. it's from the folksy flannel collection. and it's oh-so-soft.

this is my little own design. and trust me, he's verrry huggable. a little pillow monster is just the right addition to a reading nook for my 4 year old. (or so i am envisioning.) i thought it would be a great idea to start collecting little projects that i could use as baby gifts or shower pressies or something.. but owen is very quick to claim them. hrmmmm.....  i kind of just went with it as i was sewing. with lots of tips from my sewing pals.. he came together pretty quickly. a little embroidering, buttons, and stuffing... and voila! he's not perfect. but that's what makes him so cute. i tried out my first invisible seam. (yes. first!)
(and i totally had not intended for the flowers to line up. so that's why they look crooked. ha).

this is why our modern sewing group is a big thing for me! i am learning a lot, and i have very patient friends ;) it's mostly a lot of our knit night gals, plus some other fab. sewers. we get together once a month. and it's really the perfect amount of time for us to get some sewing done without any big interruptions.

i have a goal though. i want to sew a garment for me. for spring and summer... this year..... the idea of exact measurements is a little scary for me, because i just always think i'll screw it up. haha. but as with any new craft, i need to practice, and push myself. i do have a dress in mind... but i'm still thinking on it. so i'll let ya know.. eventually ;)

as i went searching for "star-1" to take a few pictures, i realized owen has himself a cute little posse of handmade stuffies....

these have all accumulated over the years.. but i have to say, i love that they are well loved and played with.
and just in case you're wondering... the projects from left to right are:
a. monster (free pattern found here on tip junkie)
b. monster pillow (my little design)
c. "collect-star" (pattern: sheldon from knitty) more pics here
d. "socktopus" (free pattern here from knitty)
e.  "muno" (pattern by michelle vess found here on ravelry)
f.  "robot" (pattern: louie the lovebot by rebecca danger)
g. "star" (pattern: crochet amigurumi rudy. from michaels.com)

i tried searching for the rudy pattern, but it seems to be no longer available. also i realize there is one more:

this is kate. pattern found here on knitty. so yes. we have quite a collection of stuffies here ;) haha...
but back to the sewing... i know i can do it... but i'm a wee bit scared....
as soon as i begin tackling the project though, i'll let ya know!

thank goodness for our modern sewing meet-ups!

how was your weekend? did you have a blast? what kind of crafting did you get up to? i'd love to hear about it! do you dabble in both sewing and yarn-y crafts? do you prefer one over the other? how do you find the balance? the coffee is on, and i'm ready to chat! xo

2.14.2012

loving is easy.

is it really mid-febuary already?? honestly. how did that happen? it's been a crazy start to the year for our little family... and i feel like we're just getting on our feet now... trying to find that oh-so-important routine... but i'm not giving up! we'll find it. we're back from our second trip to alberta since the beginning of the year. and i've got the spring cleaning bug biting at my heels.... just ready for a fresh clean start. ya know?
and with all of the hubbub of a busy start to the year... valentine's day has kind of snuck up on me.
i took a look at the calendar this weekend and went "whhhaaaaaaa???" (i bet i'm not the only one who's done that though... just sayin')

our family is not huge on celebrating valentine's day though. it's true. we're kinda frugal that way. we like to take the opportunity to say love for sure... but we don't see why money has to be spent for it. so i like finding ways to show and say love without costing much, but still being creative...  so if you're fishing for ideas....

heee hee...

- plan a surprise walk.
- bring coffee, hot chocolate, tea... whatever... ;)
- hold hands
- cuddle...
- popcorn is good...
- especially with a movie, cuddled up on the couch...

i'm sure you get the idea....  i think the most important thing though is to just enjoy being with your love... and not try to fit in other things at the same time...this is the trickiest part for me.... because i'm the queen of multi-tasking. i feel almost bored with doing just one thing at a time... and that includes knitting! i usually have to read, or be brainstorming and list making (also a downfall of mine..) at the same time. and if i can be baking as well... all the better. so i have to remind myself to just focus on one thing.. and romance should really just be that... simply romantic, not busy.

so if you're like me and see that the 14th has come quicker than expected.... try the simple, and focused valentine. even if it's just for yourself...

hmm now didn't i say something about baking? good idea!

how are you celebrating today? do you celebrate valentine's day? even a treat of yarny goodness... a coffee, you know... that little goodie that puts a smile on your face... and for you sewing friends of mine out there.. did you see luvinthemommyhood's gift to you? it's sooo cute! and i think it shows a lot of luv!!!  head on over to see it! xo

12.14.2011

i hope you don't mind.....

i'm in the zone now! for realz. :) elving is in full force, and i'm loving it!

i'm focused, and getting excited! of course there is much coffee on, and christmas tunes are playing.

Source: flickr.com via Rebecca on Pinterest

but the important thing is that i'm totally enjoying it, and i refuse to stress... 'cause i love the pre-christmas planning, and excitement. it's what makes it just so fun! well in my opinion anyways. :)

so now that i'm on a roll, i've got to get back.

what are you crafting today? any baking? watching any fav. christmas movies? i'd love to hear how your day is going! xo

12.05.2011

weekend re-cap

what a weekend! i had so much fun!

(honestly! don't let this picture fool you, i was giving owen the eye.. he kept trying to jump in front of the camera. haha)

for a first market, i think i did fairly well! it was in a smaller location, but we had 2 rooms. i loved the room i was in. and it was so fun to meet other vendors. i'm definitely inspired to do more markets, that's for sure! i had so many lovely comments from customers and browsers.

i know that as i become more practiced at markets, my table will be tweaked... but i'm really pleased with how it looked.

i had so many friends help me and encourage me! i feel like one very lucky girl. my knit night girls has lots of tips and advice on display, ... and actually a fair amount of the items were designed by jane richmond! i honestly love every. one. of her patterns, and she's graciously given me permission to sell from them! yippee!!

and i have to give a big thank you to mandy of sugar + candy for helping me with the banner and apron. i absolutely looove how it turned out! i think it looks great!

i so enjoyed this experience so very much! i had to re-create my shop at home. hahaa seriously. i did.

this is really a room where i feel inspired in!

and now on my to-do list? re-open the etsy shop! no excuses now, i'm inspired, and excited! though now that i feel like i've got a shop here at home, maybe i should just hold an open house :) i actually do have something in mind, promotion wise for facebook fans of nook! so if you haven't "liked" nook yet on facebook, it's a good time to do so!
of course, there's also christmas knitting! it's less than 3 weeks away now! yikes! good thing we're doing a low key gifting this year :) of course, my list is still long :) but isn't that part of the fun of chrsitmas? the crazy craft sessions?!

a big thank you to everyone who supported me this past weekend! not only in purchases, and in set up, but also in your words of encouragement and cheers. honestly, such a fun experience for me! also a big thank you to my hubs, and little man... they came and helped me set up and take down... what troopers!

have you ever done a market? what were your experiences? thoughts? i'd love to chat! xo

12.02.2011

it's go time!!

it's just about here! handmade for the holidays is tomorrow!!
are you in the area, and considering popping by? here are the details:

i know that a lot of work has gone into promoting this event. big props to the felted fern.  this is such a great start to the christmas season :) if you're in the area, i really hope you can make it!

oh yah baby, that's a sign and an apron!! last night i got together with the lovely mandy of sugar + candy, and look what happened!!! i can't thank her enough, i'm so excited! doesn't it look pretty? i looove it! i could not have figured this one out on my own... knitting, i can do... but this? no no.. and here's another thing... my awesome font, with the yarn ball and everything? the lovely shannon of luvinthemommyhood put that together for me! that and the whole set up of this here blog! i have the best friends. xo

here's wishing you a wonderful first weekend of december! i hope you can be super productive in your crafting! and i promise to be taking a ridiculous amount of pics at the market. i can't wait to show you my table! what are your plans for the weekend? xo

11.28.2011

staying focused...

it's time for lots and lots of coffee.....
a little bit of sleep, and a lot more coffee!

Source: google.com via Rebecca on Pinterest

handmade for the holidays is this weekend! i've got the sewing machine out now, making sure everything has labels. then it's figuring out pricing, (always the hardest part, isn't it?) and display.
i'm excited, and nervous. it's my first market. and i hope it goes well!

i've got lots to do, as well as bake a ton of cookies for a cookie exchange the day after the market, and remembering to start the advent calendar on dec first. (i almost always forget about it every year...almost) and let's not forget about the chrsitmas gift knitting! and i've even got a surprise in store for you! (i seem to love piling things onto my plate) :)

how is your week looking so far? do you have it all mapped and planned out? that's the name of the game here, so it can all get done! now for another cup of coffee:) happpy monday! xo

11.25.2011

and so it begins!

christmas is officially a month away! and as you've guessed it, there is constant knitting going on here :) not just for the market (i'm excited to say i think i might be just about done the knitting part of that!) but also, some needed woolies.  i absolutely love living out on vancouver island, but i do miss the snow :)

of course, i don't need snow to put me in the christmas spirit (though having a winter wonderland does help) we've got the christmas tunes playing, and crafting is under full force :) it's important to me to teach my little the value of giving handmade, and so i make great efforts to do as much handmade as i can, especially in this season. sure it means less gifts, but the gifts that we do share are that much more special.
i'm not saying that we shouldn't appreciate gifts that aren't handmade, (some just simply don't have the time or materials) but i think the effort going into the gift is so important.

for me, when i'm knitting a gift, every stitch is for the person intended. the item is created with that special person in mind. you know? and it could even be in baking cookies for a friend. or sending a dry mix in a mason jar, like cake, or hot chocolate,... just add milk.
i have almost as much fun finding ways to wrap a handmade gift! the possibilities are endless! but there will be more on that during our christmas 911 posts ;)

luvinthemommyhood

the lovely shannon of luvinthemommyhood and i have created a support group of sorts for christmas crafting 911. we know that this is crunch time, and we could all use all the support and encouragement, and ideas we can get. it's a crazy crafting time, but it's also a fun crafting time! so come on by and join our group!  you can find all of the info on shannon's blog and on our ravelry group.
we'd really love for you to be a part of it.

Source: bhg.com via Jillian on Pinterest

so let's get to my first mission :) my little has asked for me to knit him another "stuffie" as we call them. (soft toys). though he specifically wants a robot. i've made him muno (those of you with littles who watch "yo gabba gabba" will know who he is) and for those of you who don't.. he's a one eyed monster. muno has friends too, and a robot is one of them. but i'm wondering, does anyone know of other robot patterns that might be a good fit? i'd appreciate any tips here :)

how has christmas crafting been going for you? for those of you with littles, how do you go about teaching the value of making gifts? are any of you experienced in crafting toys? i need your help! xo

11.16.2011

mail bliss!

soo look what came in the mail yesterday afternoon!!!

isn't it purty? i loooove it! i won this gem on misocrafty's blog! she sews these awesome project bags and sells them in her etsy shop. so you can have one too! this is one talented girl, i tell ya! not only does she sew, but she's a crazy awesome knitter too! you should check out her ravelry page. honestly, she can pump out sweaters like i've never seen!

and the crazy thing, is that she is local to me, but we've still yet to meet in person! one day soon!! i love that we've gotten to know each other through the blogging world, and through ravelry. but i would looove to knit up a storm with her :)

... but back to the bag (lol)
i think it's just the perfect size.... it holds just what i need, and my poor knitting doesn't have to get tangled up in keys, camera, toddler snacks and sippy cups all in my bag ever again! yippeee! and this is really just the right timing, what with all of the market and holiday knitting i've been doing lately. there's always several projects on the go :)

and also, look. at . the. print! so so cute! and colourful.

yah i love it. and it made my day. thank you so much, melissa!

wanna check out more of her awesome goods?  be sure you do! and tell her i sent ya!

does getting gifts in the mail make you as giddy as it makes me? are you one who uses project bags? what's your fave way to take your knitting along with you, and how do you keep it all organized? xo
