i really should go organize the yarn.... but....

figuring out this balance thing in the summertime is a tough one! i can not believe how fast the days are flying by. we just keep packing in as much as we possibly can, and in the meantime, my yarn room is needing some very very serious attention.
it's a disaster zone. and it's probably unsafe to go in there. (lol... sort of)... and i still can't bring myself to take a picture of it... sorry...

(this one will have to do... it gives me better vibes. lol)

the afternoon sun comes into my little man's bedroom, and then makes his room the hottest in the house. he's finding it hard to settle at night, and i'm actually considering switching the two rooms. his room for the yarn room. but it's a ton of work.  the other room would be a bit bigger for him... and we could keep his toy kitchen in there as well... and he'd be much cooler.
buying an a/c unit is really not on the table. victoria doesn't get all THAT hot... and certainly not for very long. so i feel it's something we really don't need. the bonus is also that i'd get an opportunity to do a serious purge. (i'm weird like that... in that seeing this as a good thing... it's really more work which i don't have a lot of time for... but in the long run, order and less stuff is soooo appealing to me)...

this of course means, that it includes purging some yarn. but before you get all excited... my really nice yarn stays. ha. i have a lot of yarn i've been holding onto for years... to make afghans? i dunno. lots have been given to me, but really it's not the stuff i like knitting with any more... i've grown in my knitting... and my yarn preferences....  but i still hate the thought of throwing it out. i can still think of some uses for it, but mostly it's just taking up too much space... and therefore making the room feel overwhelming.. ... so i'm thinking of donating it. it's mostly worsted weight stuff... and dk stuff...
but right now thinking about it makes me want to just close the door....

but really i should get it done and organized... because before i know it, fall will be here and knitting will be even more fast and furious. besides, i need more room for the yarn that i love... and i might have just ordered more...

how do you keep yourself organized... do you organize by colour, by project, by weight? how do you store your yarns? let's chat... it's helping me to procrastinate ;) xo

  1. ooh! redecorating for the yarn room and the little boy room sounds fun! a lot of work, yes! but fun! :) my stash is rather modest compared to many of us and i'm pretty proud of my carefully curated stash. probably nothing compared to yours though! i just have an actual book shelf for unwound yarn and then the wound yarn goes in a separate basket. perhaps i'll flash my stash (only to you) some day. in the mean time, i have been afflicted with knitting startitis. xoxo

    1. what are you starting to knit? i always want to cast on more and more.. haha. i actually have been using a bookshelf as well! but now it's overflowing, so i've got yarns that still need to find a home somewhere in the room. haha. hence the need to get rid of what i won't ever knit with. maybe one day i'll flash my stash ;)

  2. This is how I store it: in my living room, in a glass cabinet so I can look at it everyday. It's organised by colour, because it looks prettiest that way. Now, a yarn room... I feel envious!

  3. Mine had had various homes but right now it's all in a cedar chest. I don't like that its not organized but I do like that I don't have to stare at bags and bags of yarn everyday.
I've been organizing T's playroom. Feels good to get it under control.

    1. it feels soooo good to have playrooms under control, hey? you don't have the feeling of panic whenever you enter the room haha. having to stare at bags kinda sucks, i agree... if you can't display them or have them the way you like, a cedar chest sounds perfect! i would love to own one actually. they're gorgeous! xo

  4. I don't organize.... it is all in a few tupperwares under my bed. I so wish I had a craft room to display and store it properly! I have not yet graduated to really nice yarn... I still use good ol' acrylic way more then I should. It's always such a treat when I splurge on the good stuff! :) ~Stephanie

  5. Switch the rooms. Sure it's epic but it will be worth it. Your son gets a more comfortable room. His stuff is more consolidated in the house. You will HAVE to tidy up the yarn.

That's three different wins right there!

And give the discarded yarn to WIN, or list it on Freecycle.

  6. I organize by yarn type and keep all my yarn in big plastic containers. It's not very pretty, but it keeps the yarn from getting devoured by moths! I love organizing yarn...toys, not so much. I need to go through the boys' rooms and clear out all the toys they don't use, but I've been procrastinating on that chore. Ugh!

    1. i hate going through the toys myself.. more because i have a 5 year old who suddenly decides that he haaaasss to have them all and can't part with them, and loves them soo much... but really he's forgotten about them. sigh. one of these days i'll purge heaps of toys ;) it's always better to keep your yarn away from moths! eeks! that's scary! xo
